Groundwater Modeling

Groundwater modeling is used to evaluate groundwater and soil data for a site to try to predict groundwater or contaminant behavior. Groundwater modeling is applied in:

  • Groundwater resource evaluation
  • Water supply issues
  • Remedial alternative analysis
  • Remedial design
  • Contaminant fate and transport analysis
  • Risk evaluation

ENVISION uses state-of-the-art software to model groundwater flow and contaminant transport. With our know-how, training and experience in its uses and applicability to a site, ENVISION can accurately assess these characteristics to: determine if it is cost effective for an industrial user to install a water supply well as opposed to using public water supplies, to support state or local groundwater use permit applications, to predict timing for cessation of active remediation, to evaluate various remedial alternatives, or to determine the level of risk posed by a groundwater contaminant plume.

ENVISION has the expertise and ability to develop defensible groundwater models and conclusions, and to gain regulatory acceptance of the conclusions. We have used modeling to determine if it is cost effective for a facility to install a water supply well versus other options, and to support the permitting process. ENVISION has used this tool to generate remedial action plans in the beginning of projects as well as analyzing recovery and treatment systems that have been operating for years. We are able to develop a conceptual model that makes sense by demonstrating that both the inputs into the software and the outputs from it are both reasonable and justifiable. Our personnel are formally trained and certified and we have experience applying groundwater modeling technology at a number of sites resulting in successful submissions to the regulatory agencies. In many cases, ENVISION can take existing data and analyze it for sites that have been under investigation for years. We have successfully used our expertise and software to predict current and future impacts to receptors and to justify cost effective alternatives. This can minimize the cost of unnecessary monitoring well installations as well as to justify optional remediation techniques. As an example, ENVISION has been able to justify the decommissioning of recovery and treatment systems by demonstrating that natural attenuation is taking place with no further adverse impact to receptors. The end result is less cost to our client.
